Decluttering Your Space

At the start of the new year most of us like to plan life improvements, intentions to improve our well-being, not only physically but mentally too.  Decluttering after Christmas is a great way of resetting and getting organised. Although it might seem overwhelming at first, the task of decluttering can have a significant positive impact on your mental well-being and overall quality of life.  A cluttered home can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety, whereas a tidy and organised space can promote a sense of inner calm and peace.  Furthermore, decluttering your home can provide a much more functional and efficient way of life, allowing you to enjoy your living space to its fullest.

Whilst daunting at first, starting with a clear plan and determination, it is entirely achievable.  Start by setting small tasks, a simple drawer or cupboard.  Set daily projects.  If you try to declutter a whole room in one day, it can become overwhelming and a task you wish that you didn’t start.  And then one that may not get finished.

So firstly, assess the current state of your living space.  Walk through each room, making note of any areas you want to improve.

Once you have determined the areas that need sorting, set goals for what you would like to achieve, a timeline and a system that will help the space work best for you.  Many of us accumulate possessions over the years, some of which we no longer use or need.  Old clothes, electric items, paperwork.  Be ruthless but allow yourself to keep the odd sentimental piece.  We all have those special pieces that evoke precious memories. We don’t want to dispose of anything that we will later regret and miss. So, taking our time and careful consideration is key.

Once you have decided which items you want to get rid of, you will need to decide whether to donate to charity, sell or dispose of.  After getting rid of the items you no longer need, you can then begin the process of organizing the remaining items.  There are so many great storage systems available, trays, boxes, shelving, baskets are all perfect solutions for organising items.  Items are then so much easier and quicker to find, making our daily lives much easier and reducing stress.  Not to mention that we get to use the items we had forgotten we had that were previously hidden within clutter.

Its not just items we can declutter, go through emails, phones and delete spam.  Unsubscribe from unwanted emails that fill your inboxes.  Delete photos from galleries that are no longer needed.  Sort your photos into files, for easier retrieving. These small changes can help us manage daily tasks much quicker and effectively.

In addition to mental and physical benefits, decluttering also helps the home run more efficiently and is much easier to maintain.  A clutter free home is much easier to keep clean and tidy.  Allowing us more free time to spend on what we want to do.  The home will also feel more spacious.

Ultimately, clearing you home of clutter, creates a space conducive to a peaceful, more functional life. By taking the time to eliminate unwanted items and organise, we allow a more streamline living space, reduce stress, increase productivity and welcome tranquillity to our lives.  So, start small, set achievable goals and plan for a new space that improves your mental health.
