Decorating for Christmas
Its that time of year again, November is the month we start to plan, and feel the excitement for the Christmas countdown. Christmas décor allows us to be as flamboyant or as pared back as we wish. It’s a great representation of us and our personal way of celebrating the festivities. We set an ambiance, and a magical atmosphere that fills us with joy when we return home from the Winter elements. Thoughtfully placed garlands, wreaths adorning our front doors and Christmas lights twinkling from tree silhouettes through window frames. It’s a delight appreciating the seasonal decorations from house to house. Christmas décor evokes a sense of community and a shared spirit of celebration.
There are many Christmas traditions, the most iconic and originating from Medieval times…. the Christmas Tree. Trees at Christmas served as a symbol of life amidst the Winter darkness, with decoration evolving over the years. Tree decorating is a great way of bringing the family together, whether decorating together or just sitting together at night with the twinkly lights adding to a cosy atmosphere for all to enjoy. We have come along way from simple multicoloured tinsel and baubles. Nowadays anything goes, baubles in all sizes and materials, ornaments representing our personalities and tastes, the choice is endless. At NPLH we love to use stems, eucalyptus, berries, twigs. Trailing botanicals is a beautiful way to adorn and add interest between ornaments. Often, we will have decorations that we cherish, that bring back fond memories of the years past and loved ones that may not be with us anymore. Let those special pieces remind us of the good times and a sense of comfort that they are still with us.
Christmas has definitely undergone significant modernisation. We now have faux trees, pre-lit trees, trees that twinkle at the press of a button. Artificial trees allow us with convenience and longevity.
Tree decorating seems to be happening earlier each year. Gone are the days when Christmas décor only appeared in December. There are no rules for timing. And why not if it makes you happy. At NPLH we start to introduce ornaments first, decorate shelving units with the odd festive piece. There is nothing better during the November and December nights cosying up with Christmas trinkets. Our simple Nordic ranges will fit in any space adding ambiance and excitement for the coming celebrations. Snowmen, Ceramic trees in all shapes and sizes, even Penguins are perfect for placing around the home.
Christmas Baubles are a quintessential element to our decorating and have been since the 16th century. Traditionally made in glass, the humble Bauble ornament adds nostalgia and beauty to any tree. Baubles come in so many sizes, shapes and are range from simple to intricately embellished. Sequins, beads, feathers, pearls, patterns, there is no limit to the creativity. Often, we will have a favourite, a Bauble that we have had for years that evokes special memories, one that we will never let go.
We love to experiment with Christmas décor, mix old with new. Entwine Baubles together with floristry wire, hang from ceilings. It’s the one time of year when almost anything goes. We can let our creativity free, through adorning our homes with anything we deem festive and pretty. Trailing twinkly lights on shelves, table, round mirrors. With the simple but effective portable string lights they are easy to place anywhere. Making garlands for the stairs with a mix of stems, ribbons, baubles and lights. Paper decorations are a beautiful trend right now, so beautifully made and easy to hang on any blank wall.
We cannot wait to start decorating, spreading Christmas magic around our home. Filling the home with enchanting lights, glistening ornaments. Creating that feeling of a warm festive embrace when you return to your sanctuary, from the hustle and bustle of Christmas madness outside.
