Mindfulness at Home

With Mental Health being such a priority and a topic of conversation that is rightfully so bought up more and more in the modern day.  We look at the importance of creating a safe place at home.  A place to take time out, surround ourselves with items that comfort us and give us joy.  Home is the place that we should unapologetically be able to relax and be ourselves. Close the door to the outside world, take our shoes off and feel the homeliness so familiar to us.

No matter what season, or size of our spaces we should all endeavour to create a designated area for peace and quiet, time out. A place to retreat without interruption of technology. No phone notifications, messages or calls.  At least for 5 minutes of the day.  Taking time out to practice mindfulness has numerous benefits to our health and lives in general.  We can learn to cultivate a greater sense of calm, clarity and contentment.

We can start to implement mindfulness at home by finding a quiet spot at home, at a time it is easiest to do so.  A comfortable spot, chair or bed or weather permitting, a spot outside.  Sit comfortably and concentrate on taking deep breaths and clearing our minds, taking in the moment. Relaxing every muscle, from head to toe.

Light a candle, grab a blanket, a comfortable pillow. Spray a soothing Lavender scent and reserve this time as an appointment with yourself.

Bath time is the perfect time to relax, and you can lock the door too!  Use bubble baths, essential oils, bath salts, your favorite face masks.  Find a Spa playlist and let the relaxing sounds sooth your worries away.

Obviously, bedtime is probably the best and most convenient time to create a mindful relaxing moment.  With comfortable bedding, laying in our position of choice, in peace and darkness.  A great place to practice Meditation, listen to Podcasts and drift of to a restful night’s sleep.

Relaxing doesn’t have to mean laying still and shutting out all thoughts. Reading, doing puzzles or watching your favorite TV program, listening to music, is still time out and a treat to ourselves.  Something as simple as sitting and stroking your pet, is a great way of taking a minute to reconvene. As they say ‘it’s the simple things’.

Its not always easy but having a house decluttered is conducive to living stress free. Its much easier to relax in an area that is in order.  We often make the mistake of thinking that we must do it all at once.  Its far better for us mentally to set small goals.  Aim to sort a draw in the kitchen rather than trying to declutter the whole kitchen, and if you feel you want to progress to another draw then it’s a bonus!  Throw away or donate items that are never used. Not only are they cluttering your home but taking up valuable mind space.  A home refresh can feel so rewarding to the mind, body and soul.

Mindfulness can also be practiced through communication with our family at home. Being fully present and attentive, listening with an open mind and receiving the same compassion back.  By becoming more aware of our thoughts and emotions, we can grow a better understanding of ourselves and our reactions to the outside world.

In conclusion, we want to each create an environment that we feel comfort and inner peace. A tranquil atmosphere, calming surroundings.  Soft colour palettes, warm lighting, and cosy furnishings all help to achieve a serene environment.

Surround yourself with items that bring you happiness, cherished memories and opportunities for the rest and recouperation you need.
